A set, not a booth full of foam
A video podcast gets watched, not just heard. So where you sit matters. In a bare studio you look at black cloth or a wall of foam panels. Here you sit at a dining table under a plaster ceiling, with a cast-iron fireplace behind you and real daylight on your face.
Maisonette 1897 is a renovated house on the Regentesseplein in The Hague. You hire it by the hour, with the whole house to yourself. Record a conversation at the table, a looser segment on the sofa and a short intro standing at the kitchen island, without going anywhere else.
The internet is fibre at 1 Gbit/s up and down, so you can send files or go live between takes. There are sixteen circuits with three-phase power, enough for cameras, lights and monitors at the same time.
The dining table, for a conversation at the table
The dining room is the place for a classic podcast setup. Everyone sits at one table, the cameras stand freely around it and behind your guests you see the fireplace, the wall lights and a stretch of herringbone floor.
The ceiling is 3.30 metres high, which leaves room for a boom with microphones or lights over the table without anything hanging in shot. Daylight comes from two sides, through the kitchen and through the living room, so even a recording of a few hours stays calm on screen.
The living room, for a conversation on the sofa
For an interview or a conversation that feels more like a visit, head to the living room. A long white sofa, a rug on the floor, the fireplace and two tall windows with stained glass.
The soft furnishings make this room sound calmer than the dining room. The west light makes the afternoon warm and gentle here, lovely for a long conversation that runs into the evening.
The kitchen, for a standing setup
Not every conversation has to happen at a table. At the marble kitchen island with bar stools you can record an intro, a short standing interview or an episode where something gets made.
Behind you are the stained glass windows and the green of the garden. In the morning the first daylight comes in here.
Honest about sound
Maisonette 1897 is a home, not a sound studio. No street noise comes in and it is quiet, but the rooms have no acoustic treatment.
High ceilings and a wooden floor sound lively. For tight audio, bring your own microphones and keep them close to the speakers, plus a few absorbers out of shot if you like. The living room, with its sofa and rug, has the least echo.
