Photo studio with real daylight

Daylight studio in The Hague

Daylight from the east and the west, 3.30 metre ceilings and eight stained glass windows. The alternative to a white studio, with a set you do not have to build.

The light clock

Where the light is, at every moment of the day

The front of the house faces west and the garden faces south-east. So over the course of the day the light travels from one side of the house to the other. Plan your shoot around the light you are after.

  1. Morning

The sun comes in from the east. In the kitchen, the children's room and the garden the light is low and soft, with long shadows across the floor.

  2. Midday

The light is high and even. The dining room gets light from two sides and the garden is still in the sun. Calm light for product shots and lookbooks.

  3. Afternoon

The sun moves round to the street side. The living room fills with warm west light, laying long bands across the parquet through the tall windows.

Low, golden light in the living room and the kitchen. The moment for portraits with warm skin tones and soft contrast.

The alternative to the white studio

Look for a photo studio in The Hague and you mostly find white rooms with strobes and a paper backdrop. Handy if you want to build everything yourself. But sometimes you want real light and a real setting, without putting up a set first.

Maisonette 1897 is a renovated house from 1897 on the Regentesseplein, hired by the hour. Light comes in from two sides, through tall stained glass windows and original sliding doors. The walls are light, the floors warm wood and the ceilings high, so the light bounces back softly.

You get daylight that moves from room to room through the day, and a set that is already there. Add your own lights if you like, there is plenty of power.

The kitchen, light from east and west

The kitchen island in morning light with candlesticks and a green plant

The kitchen has windows on two sides. In the morning the east light falls across the marble island, and at the end of the day the light comes back from the other side.

The stained glass above the windows tints the light a little. On a sunny morning the window frames draw sharp bands across the worktop, lovely for food and product photography.

The dining room, light from two sides

The dining room with a light table, a piano and wall lights

The dining room sits between the kitchen and the living room. With the sliding doors open it gets light from two sides, which gives soft, even shadows. Around midday this is the calmest spot in the house.

With a 3.30 metre ceiling there is room for a large reflector or a light high above your subject. The herringbone floor and the cast-iron fireplace make a warm base.

The living room, the west light

The living room with a white sofa, fireplace and tall windows in afternoon light

In the afternoon and evening the living room is at its best. West light comes in through two tall stained glass windows and grows warmer as the day goes on.

The walls are light, the sofa is white and the fireplace is black. A calm, classic set where the light does the work.

The light in your own hands

Daylight is beautiful, but sometimes you want to shape it. On the raised ground floor there are pleated blinds to soften and spread the light.

Feel free to bring your own strobes or continuous lights. There are sixteen circuits with three-phase power, so you do not have to choose which lamp stays on. Want to know how the light falls on the day of your shoot? Come and have a look beforehand.

Questions

Questions about light and the studio

It is a home with what a studio offers. You get real daylight, high ceilings and enough power for your own lights. There is no white backdrop or strobes; bring them if you need them.

That depends on the room. The kitchen is loveliest in the morning, the dining room around midday and the living room at the end of the day with the west light. Not sure? Ask us and we will help you pick the best time.
